Learn how to write a simple, effective business plan.
Business plans are extremely useful tools for both new and existing businesses. There are many books and web sites available that explain how to write a business plan; but often, they are unnecessarily complicated for the small business owner. To make matters worse, some business owners would not be comfortable writing a letter to their mother, much less a business plan. So sometimes, writing a business plan can seem like an overwhelming task. The SCWBC has worked with thousands of new business owners to help them write business plans for all kinds of businesses, including service businesses, retail stores, manufacturers, health care operations, construction businesses, and many more. We have developed a simple business plan template that is designed to capture the most critical information you will need. We offer a three hour course, How to Start Your Business, Step by Step, that teaches you step by step how to write each section of the business plan. Once you have made some progress on your business plan, you can request a consultation with a business coach, who will help you figure out how to complete any areas that are difficult for you. If you take our Core Four training, you should be finished writing your business plan by the end of the course. A business plan is used for several purposes. New businesses often need funding, such as loans, and lenders will want to see a business plan in order to approve the loan. The lenders are looking for very specific information, such as Sources and Uses of funds, a Cash Flow worksheet, and a clearly written Executive Summary. Likewise, when an existing business wants to expand, it is often in the same position of approaching lenders and needing a business plan that details the expansion plans. Both new and existing businesses use the business plan as a way to manage the business. It contains key information that can be tracked and compared on a monthly basis to ensure the business is staying on track and to highlight any areas that need attention.
